Today is a big day for Platform9, a new startup which just came out of stealth to announce their exciting new private cloud provisioning platform.

A new private cloud company has surfaced, and it’s full of ex-VMware employees.

Startup cloud vendor Platform9 emerged from stealth mode today with $4.5 million in Series A funding and a plan that company officials believe will reshape the private cloud marketplace.

I recently sat down for a presentation and interview with two of the Platform9 co-founders, Sirish Raghuram and Madhura Maskasky. We discussed the overall platform and the evolution of the concept that brought the team together to create this new and exciting startup.

Private cloud companyPlatform9 unveiled its new software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform, designed to transform on-premise servers into self-service private clouds. The company was founded by several VMware (VMW) veterans with the idea of bringing the agility of a public cloud environment to existing infrastructure.

There is a new player in the virtualization ecosystem and is called Platform9. The company is founded by early VMware engineers (with several years of experience) who have taken a fundamentally new approach to creating and managing private clouds.

Today’s IT managers are under pressure to deliver the sort of agility that’s offered by the public cloud but with the security and cost benefits of using existing infrastructure.

Back in 2009 I saw a talk by then VMware CTO Steve Herrod, now a partner at General Catalyst Partners, who described a private Amazon Web Services-like environment where users could provision services with the same ease they do in the public cloud. It was the first time I heard the term “private cloud.”
