Case Study: From AWS to an OpenStack Private Cloud

The session will focus on an enterprise company’s transition from public to OpenStack private cloud. It will highlight the planning process working towards the move, one time and ongoing challenges experienced, considerations that went into selecting an managed OpenStack offering, learnings and best practices built from using OpenStack, current automation and future plans around containers.

Speakers: Udy Gold, Sr. Director Data Centers & Cloud Operations, PubMatic and Madhura Maskasky, Co-founder and VP Product, Platform9

Case Study: Running a multi-datacenter all production OpenStack cloud for real-time ad analytics platform

Running an all-production OpenStack cloud, scaling it across multiple datacenters and managing it operationally is a daunting task for an operations team of a seasoned enterprise company with budget and resources to manage the cloud. Doing so as a nimble startup with limited resources is even harder. This is the key reason startup companies choose public cloud, and pay the penalty of high associated costs. This session will highlight how a new tech startup achieved the same scale and agility that a public cloud offers while choosing OpenStack as their private cloud platform.

Speakers: Amro Shihadah, Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, IDenTV and Madhura Maskasky, Co-founder and VP Product, Platform9

Bringing Cloud Identity to Platform9 OpenStack

Enabling access to OpenStack-based private cloud through external identity provider is a tactical decision of paramount importance to today’s enterprise. It seamlessly extends access to private cloud resource to every employee of the company. However, there is a lack of good guides explaining all the steps involved the process. Through this talk, we aim to full fill this gap. We also intend this talk to start the discussions on how can this be made a primary aspect of OpenStack user management and can be made simpler to spread its adoption.

Speakers: Sachin Manpathak, Tech Lead, Platform9 and Bob Deuel, Software Engineer, Platform9

Operating Models for OpenStack/ Emerging Consumption Model

This talk aims to help users understand the different OpenStack deployment models and why they may choose one over another.

Speaker: Cody Hill, Systems Engineer, Platform9

Scaling and Protecting OpenStack Services with Kubernetes

A performance issue with Nova, combined with our interest in using containers as a base layer for OpenStack led us to investigate exploiting Kubernetes with containers to improve Nova performance and uptime. In this talk, we first describe how we developed a Kubernetes-based dynamic monitoring and autoscaling mechanism for addressing a problem we experienced with the Nova API service. We then expand our scope to explore the broader rewards and challenges of using Kubernetes to deploy, scale, and provide high availability for OpenStack services.

Speakers: Bich Le, Co-founder and Chief Architect, Platform9 and Daniel Lipovetsky, Software Engineer, Platform9

Replaying Nova Placements for Fun and Profit

In any cloud environment, the placement of instances is very important E.g. a continuous integration workload is CPU bound and must be placed on hosts with more CPU capacity while a NoSQL database runs better on a machine with more free memory. Fine tuning instance placements in Nova require tinkering with scheduler parameters. This is hard to do in a production cloud. If a placement looks wrong, the cloud operators often have to wait for reproduction and try to reason it out with available logs.  Instead, what if there was an offline tool which can replay any scheduling decision in the past and provide the full flexibility of debugging? The operators can simulate placement with different combinations of scheduler parameters, make changes and try it out as if it was done in production. At the end of the exercise, they will know the exact changes needed to get the placements right in production without any guesswork. It helps developers test out their changes before they are deployed.

Speakers: Sachin Manpathak, Tech Lead, Platform9 and Pushkar Acharya, Software Engineer, Platform9

Raising Money In the Private Cloud Market

Startups are critical for an Open Source project such as OpenStack to help bring critical innovation and out of box thinking. A key requirement to building a successful tech startup is raising venture capital to turn your entrepreneurial dream into a reality. This session will be useful for new entrepreneurs looking to raise capital for their startup idea as well as existing entrepreneurs and ecosystem members to get a pulse of where and how funding decisions are being made in the broader private/hybrid cloud space.

Speakers: Ryan Floyd, Founding Managing Director, Storm Ventures and Madhura Maskasky, Co-founder and VP Product, Platform9
