Platform9 started as a managed OpenStack vendor, but the Sunnyvale, Calif-based startup has become a player in container tech since the introduction of its managed Kubernetes service.

Platform9 today announced expanded support for on-premises deployments of its Managed Kubernetes service. This makes it easier for customers to launch the popular container orchestration software on infrastructure that’s managed using VMware vSphere, Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV), and bare metal servers.

As more enterprises gravitate toward containers, Platform9’s Managed Kubernetes is a Software-as-a-Service offering that works across both public cloud and on-premises server infrastructure.

What they do: Provide “open source-as-a-service for enterprises that need faster and easier ways to manage cloud infrastructure across multiple platforms.”

Serverless computing frameworks are widely regarded as the next big thing in enterprise IT because they are based on an event-driven architecture that makes servers, storage and networking resources dynamically available as needed using a programming construct known as functions. But DevOps teams are challenged in finding a way to orchestrate all those functions in concert with one another.

AWS and VMware now are partners but it might be only a matter of time before AWS moves to take its own path.

Platform9 added an open source workflow framework to its Fission service platform that is designed to extend the functionality of serverless technology deployments.

The new Platform9 channel program comes in the midst of growing demand for the new Managed Kubernetes offering, and other funding and growth achievements.

Platform9 announced a new $22 million Series C round of funding on June 28, bringing total funding to date for the managed cloud services vendor up to $36.5 million. The new round was led by Canvas Ventures and included the participation of Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE), Redpoint Ventures and Menlo Ventures.
