Platform9, Commvault Team Up on Private Cloud Data Protection

A new partnership brings together Platform9’s modern private cloud experience and Commvault’s proven cyber resilience, delivering backup, DR, and workload protection for enterprises.

As a Chief Technology Officer at Platform9, I’ve had countless conversations with enterprise IT leaders who all echo the same concern: how can we modernize our infrastructure without sacrificing security or operational continuity? With business continuity a top concern of our IT customers, we made it a priority to address this capability head on. Today, I’m proud to share a significant step in answering that question – our new partnership with Commvault.

This collaboration integrates Commvault’s trusted data protection capabilities into our Private Cloud Director platform. The result is a powerful solution that simplifies backup, recovery, and cyber resilience for both virtual machines and Kubernetes workloads. And more importantly, it does so in a way that reflects our core commitment: delivering modern, secure, and trusted private cloud infrastructure that enterprises can rely on.

A Trusted Path to Modernization

At Platform9, we’re committed to supporting the full spectrum of features enterprise customers expect – clustering, high availability, live migration, and software-defined networking – along with modern cloud-native capabilities with Kubernetes. That’s why Private Cloud Director is built as a plug-and-play solution for organizations still reliant on legacy virtualization platforms. It provides a seamless transition path: familiar operations with cloud-native, self-service and multi-tenant support.

When we speak to customers, the need for enhanced security always surfaces as a top priority. They want to modernize through migration to a new private cloud foundation, but they can’t afford to compromise on resilience, data integrity, or compliance. That’s precisely what this integration with Commvault addresses.

Security and Resilience

Commvault brings decades of expertise in protecting enterprise workloads across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. By integrating their agentless backup and recovery capabilities into our Private Cloud Director, we’re offering a broad set of capabilities to our customers.

  • Agentless virtual machine protection – Agent based virtual machine backup and DR are difficult to manage for infrastructure administrators. Lack of application credentials and a variety of operating systems makes the management of backup DR a major challenge. Commvault addresses this by leveraging Platform9’s native capability of snapshotting virtual machine disks. The snapshot capability is done at the hypervisor level making it easy for the administrator to provide backup and DR at the infrastructure layer.
  • Application-consistent backups – Commvault application-aware plugin for applications like MSSQL, Oracle etc. can interact directly with the virtual machine operating system and the application itself to quiesce the application before performing the backup operation, making the snapshot and backup consistent without any recovery risk during the rollback or recovery procedures.
  • Granular file recovery – Commvault provides a way to browse and recover specific files within the backup done for a virtual machine. This ability is flexible and provides granular recovery in case of corruption or cyber attacks.
  • Tenant aware recovery – Commvault integrates with Private Cloud Director’s tenant concept and can provide self service capabilities for the users to backup and recover their own virtual machines without administrators intervention.
  • Disaster recovery (DR) – Commvault DR provides a native integration with Platform9 Private Cloud Director, leveraging Private Cloud Director’s native snapshot capabilities to backup and replicate data. Commvault also uses a storage neutral approach for replication across sites while maintaining a stringent Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO). In addition to the replication, it integrates with Private Cloud Director to recover one or more virtual machines along with its full metadata.
  • Kubernetes protection Commvault has native capabilities to work with Kubernetes. Depending on the Kubernetes deployment, backup and DR can be done at the virtualization layer or at the Kubernetes layer by protecting Kubernetes Persistent Volumes and Persistent Volume Claims without relying on the underlying Kubernetes storage provider.

These aren’t optional features – they’re foundational requirements for any modern  private cloud environment. With this integration, we bring in the enterprise-ready Commvault business continuity solution to Private Cloud Director.

Why This Partnership Matters Now

The private cloud landscape is changing rapidly. With the virtualization market in flux and enterprises under pressure to cut costs while increasing agility, many are rethinking their legacy strategies. But migrating doesn’t have to mean starting over. Our partnership with Commvault makes that transition smoother, faster, and more secure.

Together, we’re giving enterprises a way to build cloud-native capabilities using the tools, systems, and infrastructure they already know without compromising on security or resilience.

Looking Ahead

At Platform9, our mission is to provide full-featured, secure, and trusted private cloud solutions that meet enterprises where they are – and help them get where they want to go. This integration with Commvault is a powerful example of that mission in action.

For IT leaders seeking to modernize without compromise, we believe this partnership delivers what they’ve been asking for: a path forward that balances innovation with trust. That’s the kind of transformation we’re excited to lead.
